There is a reason why students chose the subject they want to major in; they enjoy it. At least I enjoy my major. Being a Mass Comm major is enjoyable to me because I don’t consider mass comm. related assignments, “work.” And isn’t that what the saying is? Choose a career that doesn’t seem like work, or something along those lines. A career in the mass comm field is exactly what I want to accomplish, although I am having a hard time accomplishing that goal by facing setbacks outside of my major.
My mind is set on the perfect job for me, and it has nothing to do with Social Work, Physical Geology or Chemistry. So why is it that I’m required to take these General Education courses, when they have nothing to do with what I want to do with my life?
For the past year and a half, I have struggled with several gen ed courses. Struggling with these courses has set me back quite a bit. It also enabled me from being accepted into my major, due to my low GPA after receiving low grades from my gen ed courses. To me, it is a waste of time and money. For those who know what they want to do with their life and have chosen a major, should not be required to take gen ed courses. In fact, not taking gen ed courses will also reduce their time at their desired school, which will result in lower overall costs and a cut back on student loans being used. Ideally, not taking gen eds would reduce the average four year program to an accelerated two year program.
For those who are unsure about what they want to do with their life, then yes, please proceed to take gen ed courses. The benefit of taking gen ed courses will provide guidance once you have found your niche.
I understand that the reasoning behind gen ed courses are so that we all become well-rounded students and people. But there is a reason why I decided not to make Chemistry as my major; because I simply suck at it. Gen ed’s should be left as optional or in other words, a minor.
